SUEZ 10 High Street, Suite K Wakefield, RI 02879 suez Phone: 401-789-0271 PUBLIC NOTICE IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER Suez Water (PWS#RI1615624) Has Levels of Disinfection Byproducts (DBPS) Above Drinking Water Standards Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency. as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we are doing to correct this situation. This notice only applies to URI Bay Campus customers, however, because we are correcting an error in a previous notice sent to all customers, this notice is being sent to all of our customers. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results from 10/1/2020 to 12/31/2020 and 1/1/2021 to 3/31/2021 show that our system exceeds the standards, or maximum contaminant levels (MCLS) for trihalomethanes (TTHM) at our URI Bay Campus site. The standard for TTHM is 0.080 mg/L. It is determined by averaging all samples at each sample site for the past 12 months. The level of TTHM averaged at our URI Bay Campus site for 10/1/2020 to 12/31/2020 was 0.083 mg/L. In our previous Public Notice for the 10/1/2020 to12/31/2020 period that was distributed on 3/24/2021, we stated that we were back in compliance as of 3/16/2021 based on our latest testing results. Even though the levels improved significantly and are now below the limit in individual samples, the yearly-average level of TTHM at the URI Bay Campus site for 1/1/2021 to 3/31/2021 was 0.082 mg/L due to the high 2020 levels included in the annual average. What should I do? There is nothing you need to do. You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. If a situation arises where the water is no longer safe to drink, you will be notified within 24 hours. If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your health care providers about drinking this water. What does this mean? This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified within 24 hours. TTHMS are four volatile organic chemicals which form when disinfectants react with natural organic matter in the water. Some people who drink water containing TTHMS in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer. What is being done? An Action Plan was submitted to the State on April 28, 2021 as required by the Rhode Island Department of Health Drinking Water Division. The Action Plan included: An analysis of our system water age Additional testing of our water for compounds that could contribute to formation of trihalomethanes. Assisting URI Bay Campus with periodic flushing on their Campus to improve water circulation. Arecommendation that URI Bay Campus add mixing to their storage tank to assist in reduction of water age and disinfection by-product formation. If you have any questions, please contact SUEZ Water at 401-789-0271 Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses).
