Preparing for the next 50 years RHODE ISLAND TURNPIKE AND BRIDGE Newport Pell Bridge Roadway Deck Repair Project AUTHORITY Construction Update: Phase Two Begins The Newport Pell Bridge Roadway Deck Repair Project is going smoothly, and we want to share some information about Phase Two of the project to help you plan your travel to and from Aquidneck Island. Beginning in early August, we will use the movable median barrier to try to keep two lanes open in the direction of heaviest traffic during rush hours (6am-9am/3pm-6pm): heading into Newport in the morning, and heading out of Newport in the evening (there will be one lane open in the opposite direction during rush hours keep one lane open in each direction during non-rush hours prohibit overwide and overweight trucks from crossing the bridge display the estimated time it will take to cross the bridge on the new digital traffic management signs indicate whether a lane is open or closed via the new lane control signals Travel speeds will be reduced to 25 miles per hour on the bridge during construction, which will take place day and night.
